A 38-year-old James City County man is facing numerous charges, including felony strangulation, after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend in the Longhill Grove Apartments on Saturday night.
Maj. Stephen Rubino of the James City County Police Department said Ryan DeCarlo Braxton was in a verbal argument with his 32-year-old girlfriend just before 9 p.m. Saturday when he allegedly punched and slapped her before choking her to the point where she could not breathe. She was able to break free and call police while running to her vehicle.
Braxton then allegedly entered the vehicle and ripped the key out of the ignition, causing damage to the ignition. He then fled the area. Officers responding to the girlfriend’s call quickly found him, and after a short foot pursuit, he was taken into custody, Rubino said.
Medics at the scene treated and released the girlfriend.
Braxton is facing one felony count of strangulation and one count of assault and battery, destruction of property, resisting arrest and drunk in public, all misdemeanors. He is scheduled to appear in Williamsburg-James City County District Court at 2 p.m. May 29.
