Programs in the York County School Division and Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools are highlighted in the 18th annual Virginia School Boards Association’s Showcases for Success directory.
The Showcases for Success director features K-12 programs in public schools that focus on leadership, advocacy and support, which was this year’s theme.
“In addition to highlighting some of the best practices taking place in Virginia’s schools, the Showcases for Success directory can serve as a starting point to develop similar programs in other school divisions,” said Gina Patterson, VSBA executive director, in a news release.
WJCC was recognized for being the first school division on the continent to participate in the Association for Manufacturing Excellence Adopt-A-School Initiative. The program gives opportunities for teachers and students to attend conferences and workshops at reduced rates, and includes a free subscription to AME’s Target magazine.
In early October last year, WJCC students visited Walmart Import Distribution Center, Ball Corporation and Printpack Inc. to celebrate Manufacturing Day and learn about job opportunities in manufacturing and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
YCSD was recognized for Accent on Academics, a segment of school board meetings that allows school employees and students to talk about effective education programs.
“Accent on Academics is a program that supports and celebrates the dedication of our teachers, enthusiasm of our students, and the effective instructional practices that are happening each day in YCSD,” reads a statement on the VSBA website.
The most recent installation of Accent on Academics allowed students the opportunity to showcase their published books and explain how they are motivating students to read.
