Incumbent Roberts District Supervisor John McGlennon announced Tuesday he will seek re-election to the seat in November’s election.

McGlennon said last week he planned to run for the position after the James City County Democratic Committee canceled its caucus because he was the only Democrat nominated for the job.

The announcement pits McGlennon against Republican challenger Heather Cordasco, a member of the Williamsburg-James City County School Board who announced her intention to run for the seat in February.

McGlennon, the chairman of the Department of Government at the College of William & Mary, was first elected in 1997. He began his time on the board as the Jamestown supervisor, a position he held until redistricting pushed him into the Roberts seat. He is wrapping up his first term representing the Roberts District.

“This is a critical election that will decide whether James City’s residents will make their own decisions about county policy or whether outside ideological organizations will impose their own narrow views on our community, “ McGlennon said in a news release.

He said he has been able to work with others regardless of party affiliation, noting the preservation of Mainland Farm as a specific achievement. He also said he has worked to strengthen the county’s tax base and make sure citizens are heard on issues that matter to them.

“People want to know that they have a representative who will make sure they get a fair hearing, and that they’ve got someone working for them,“ he said in the release.

McGlennon received his bachelor’s degree from Fordham University in New York City and his master’s and doctorate degrees from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

The Roberts District encompasses the easternmost part of James City County, including Grove, Kingsmill and neighborhoods along Lake Powell Road. McGlennon lives in Rolling Woods with his wife, Terry, who works for Newport News Public Schools.

The election will be held Nov. 3.
