A corrections officer’s lack of criminal history and cooperation with the prosecution led to no active jail time on a charge of having sexual relations with an inmate.

Alexander Koehler, 25, received a 12-month sentence Wednesday, and Williamsburg-James City County Circuit Court Judge Michael McGinty agreed to suspend the entire 12 months after reviewing the presentence report that details Koehler’s background and history.

Koehler, who worked at Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail as a corrections officer, was arrested in July after jail administration reported he had sex with a 30-year-old inmate in June.

Koehler and the inmate admitted to having sex, according to Commonwealth’s Attorney Nate Green.

A criminal complaint filed against Koehler states he and the inmate flirted with each other while she cleaned the medical wing. On June 19, the two met in the laundry room, where the inmate performed oral sex on Koehler before the two engaged in sexual intercourse.

During a sentencing hearing Wednesday, McGinty acknowledged Koehler had no prior convictions, had served in the Marine Corps and took responsibility for his actions at the jail, Green said.

Koehler, who is from Hayes, must serve 200 hours of community service for the crime.

He originally pleaded guilty in January to one felony count of carnal knowledge of an inmate, but that charge was reduced to a misdemeanor count of accessory after the fact.

VPRJ Superintendent John Kuplinski confirmed in January that Koehler is no longer an employee of the jail.
