An outspoken James City County resident is vying for the Republican nomination for the Stonehouse seat on the Board of Supervisors.

Sue Sadler, who announced her run Tuesday, is a fixture at supervisors meetings, where she regularly uses the public comment period to speak to the board.

The Stonehouse seat is currently held by Jim Kennedy, whose term concludes at the end of the year. He has not announced whether he will run for a third consecutive term.

The Nov. 3 election will also determine who will fill the seats in the Berkeley and Roberts districts, currently held by Republican Mary Jones and Democrat John McGlennon, respectively.

“As Supervisor, I want to be a voice for common sense in the decision making process in James City County,” Sadler said in a news release announcing her campaign. “I will stand up for the residents of Stonehouse, protecting their rights and fighting for smaller, more accountable local government.”

Sadler said she would “stand up against” tax increases, while working to keep government spending down and to reduce debt.

“As a mother and a grandmother, my greatest concern for our county is its future. I have two precious and energetic grandsons, who are being raised to love God, love their family, and love America,” she said. “For all our children and grandchildren, I want to be sure James City County isn’t just a great place to grow up, but a great place to earn a living after you’ve grown up.”

Sadler is a retired stylist who lives in the Stonehouse District with her family. She grew up in York County and is a 1973 graduate of York High. As she worked toward her certification in cosmetology at New Horizons, she worked for Old Point National Bank. She then spent 12 years as a self-employed stylist before retiring.

She is on the board of directors for the Small Family Farm Foundation and is a member of the James City County Republican Committee and the Historic Triangle Republican Women’s Club.

Her announcement comes about a week after Planning Commissioner Heath Richardson announced he was seeking the nomination only to end his campaign a few days later when he learned he is ineligible to run because he is a federal employee.
