Sheriff Robert “Bob” Deeds is seeking another four-year term in office.

Deeds, who has run the Williamsburg-James City County Courthouse on Monticello Avenue since 2000, said he wants to focus on improving technology and efficiency in the office.

He has already spearheaded software upgrades to control security and various security systems, launched a new website for the office and improved form handling, according to a news release.

Deeds said he has also minimized overtime and identified low-cost training opportunities to save money in various departments.

“We try hard, given our limited resources, to control personnel costs and operating expenses, and use savings to improve our procedures,” he said.

As sheriff, Deeds is in charge of all court operations in Williamsburg and James City County and oversees 14 full-time and five part-time or on-call deputies. He is also responsible for civil processes, such as serving levies and evictions.

“I hope that my efforts to improve operations, respond to the changing law enforcement environment and insure that our office meets and exceeds state standards has earned the public trust that will allow me to continue those efforts as Sheriff for Williamsburg and James City County,” he said.

In his 14 years in office, he has expanded community outreach through local programs, increased cooperation with local law enforcement agencies and gotten accreditation and reaccreditation by the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission.

Deeds spent six years in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and 30 years with the Virginia State Police prior to becoming Sheriff. He took over for former Sheriff Walter Dutton after the merger between the Williamsburg and James City County Sheriff’s Offices in 1998.

Citizens will cast their votes for sheriff Nov. 3.
