James City County Police believe the same suspect or suspects are behind a string of car break-ins that has hit several neighborhood throughout James City County since the start of the month.

More than 40 incidents of vehicles being tampered with or broken into were reported between Sept. 1 and 12.

The most recent break-ins occurred in the neighborhoods of St. George’s Hundred and Graylin Woods, both off John Tyler Highway. Deputy Chief Stephen Rubino said 16 car break-ins were reported overnight Sept. 10.

All the vehicles were unlocked, he said. Of the 16 vehicles, only five had nothing taken. A vehicle in the 100 block of Wellington Circle reported a wallet containing $600 in cash was stolen. Rubino said the wallet was later recovered but the cash was missing.

A necklace and some CDs were reported stolen from a vehicle in the 200 block of Charleston Place, and two phones and an 8-inch folding knife all valued at $250 were reported stolen from a vehicle in the 4600 block of Yardley Loop.

Rubino said one citizen of Wellington Loop chased down two individuals on foot around 2 a.m. Sept. 11 and observed them getting into a car. The citizen was able to get the license plate number of the car, and police tracked the car later on in Toano. The individuals were questioned and released, Rubino said.

Six break-ins reported over the weekend in Kingsmill, Lanexa and Scott’s Pond were not necessarily connected to the St. George’s Hundred and Graylin Woods incidents, Rubino said.

“We’ve questioned a number of people and the investigation is ongoing,” Rubino said.
