A James City County police officer pulled over a car on Harpoon Court in the Grove area around 1:30 p.m. Sunday for a broken left brake light, according to a police report. The officer reports smelling a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, which prompted a search.

The officer found a backpack that contained a bag of green plant material believed to be marijuana that was later weighed at about 8 ounces. A .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun, a digital scale and a red prescription inhaler were also found in the backpack.

Travis David Mark Campbell, a 24-year-old from James City County who was sitting in the backseat of the car, told the officer the items belonged to him. Upon a search of Campbell, a second inhaler and cash was found.

Campbell has been charged with felony possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute.

Two other people were in the car at the time of the traffic stop. Neither are facing charges.
