A 15-year-old is facing charges after police say he was found walking along Penniman Road on Wednesday night with a handgun tucked into the waistband of his pants.
Maj. Stephen Rubino of the James City County Police Department said an officer on patrol saw two people walking on the 1000 block of Penniman Road at about 11 p.m. Wednesday. The officer stopped and talked to them and noticed what was believed to be an odor of marijuana.
One of the two people was a 15-year-old male who told the officer he had cigarettes on him. The officer searched him and found an unloaded .22-caliber handgun.
The boy is facing one count of possession of a handgun under the age of 18 and one count of possession of a concealed weapon, both misdemeanors. The other person walking with the boy was not charged.
Rubino said there was not any indication in the police report where the boy got the gun.
