Arson is believed to be the cause of a fire that caused heavy damage to a vacant building in Toano on Thursday night.
The building is on Turlington Road near the intersection of Richmond Road. James City County Fire Department Assistant Chief Bob Ryalls said several calls came in around 6:45 p.m. reporting the fire. Units from his department and the James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Department arrived on scene to find part of the building on fire.
Ryalls said the fire inside the building was heavy. Units remained outside, where they subdued much of the fire before going inside. The fire was under control between 7:30 and 7:45 p.m. Units cleared the scene at 8:30 p.m.
Nobody was hurt during the fire.
Some kind of incendiary item was used to start the fire, Ryalls said. No other information on the item used was available Thursday night.
James City County fire marshals continue to investigate the fire. Anyone with information should call 220-0626 and ask for the fire marshal’s office.
