Two of the 11 places on Preservation Virginia’s list of the most endangered historic sites in the state are in the Historic Triangle.
The sites are the Williamsburg battlefield from the Civil War and the James River viewshed. Preservation Virginia is a nonprofit devoted to preserving and revitalizing historically significant sites in Virginia.
The Williamsburg battlefield occupies land in Upper York County and the City of Williamsburg. A 2009 study identified more than 1,000 acres of the battlefield as eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The site is currently labeled “at risk” by the Civil War Trust, a national nonprofit devoted to preserving Civil War battlefields.
A key site from the Battle of Williamsburg was the subject of much discussion last year as York County updated its comprehensive plan.
The James River viewshed includes waters visible on the river from the Historic Triangle. Preservation Virginia outlines a proposed Dominion Virginia Power transmission line that would cross river as a potential threat to the area’s “scenic integrity,” according to a Preservation Virginia news release announcing the most endangered sites.
