A 40-year-old James City County man is facing 36 felonies after he allegedly schemed SunTrust locations in James City County and other banks across the state out of more than $90,000.

Investigators believe Rajesh Attri paid three women to make small cash deposits to open accounts at various SunTrust locations under false names. He is then accused of making numerous fraudulent electronic deposits into those accounts. Maj. Stephen Rubino of the James City County Police Department said Attri then wrote bad checks knowing there were insufficient funds in the accounts, causing losses to SunTrust of more than $90,000.

Attri is accused of conducting the scheme between July and September of last year. When asked if the three women were facing any charges and about the delay between the timeframe of the alleged scheme and Attri’s arrest on Monday, Rubino said he cannot release any more information as the case is still under investigation.

Along with three felony counts of identity theft, Attri faces one felony count of credit card forgery, 16 felony counts of passing bad checks and 16 felony counts of fraud.

Banks from throughout Virginia are believed to be involved in the scheme, Rubino said.
