A Williamsburg man was taken to the hospital after the pickup truck he was driving crashed into a Williamsburg Area Transit Authority bus that was attempting to stop at a bus stop on Friday.
James City County Fire Department District Chief Bob Ryalls said the incident occurred at about noon today on the 7200 block of Merrimac Trail. EMS crews took 42-year-old Roger Geiger Jr. to the hospital for treatment following the injury.
The driver of the bus was not at fault. Maj. Stephen Rubino of the James City County Police Department said the bus had turned on its flashers to stop at a bus stop when Geiger ran into it. Geiger was following too closely and attempted to change lanes when the bus slowed down, but he was unable to move over.
Ryalls said the incident caused significant damage to the truck. WATA Executive Director Kevan Danker said the bus had significant rear end damage and is currently being towed to a body shop, where mechanics will have to inspect the inside for engine damage.
Danker said the incident knocked WATA off schedule for a time but another bus has been dispatched to that route and everything has been caught up. There was one passenger on the bus at the time of the incident.
Geiger is facing one count of following too closely.
