A Manassas woman died Thursday in a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 64 West in James City County.
Sgt. Michelle Anaya of the Virginia State Police said a 2003 Chrysler Town & Country minivan driven by 43-year-old Lauren Michele Monroe collided with a 2005 Subaru Outback at milemarker 225 at about 3:07 p.m. near the New Kent County line. The collision caused both vehicles to lose control, sending them into the median between the east- and westbound lanes.
Monroe’s van struck a tree, partially ejecting her from the vehicle. She was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene from her injuries. The Subaru, driven by 68-year-old woman from Cape Charles, ran off the road, striking a high tension wire guard rail, causing it to overturn.
The driver of the Subaru was airlifted to the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond where she is receiving treatment. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have notified the families of the two women involved in the incident.
The crash closed the westbound lanes of Interstate 64 for about four hours Thursday, causing a detour to be set up. Traffic was routed off the road at exit 227. The road was open again by 7:15 p.m.
No charges have been filed in the incident.
