James City County citizens have a chance to influence the county’s decision on whether to change county regulations dealing with accessory apartments.
The county’s Planning Division is asking citizens to submit comments and input about accessory apartments in the county. Currently, apartments are allowed in agricultural, mixed-use and several residential districts. In two residential districts, accessory apartments are allowed with a special use permit.
The Planning Commission requested staff to consider changes to the county regulations on accessory apartments, specifically in the sections dealing with definitions, provisions and procedures.
Currently, accessory apartments are required to be a separate unit that cannot be larger than 35 percent of the main building’s floor space.
Citizens interested in providing feedback should fill out an online survey by Feb. 14 or send written comments to the James City County Planning Division at 101-A Mounts Bay Road, Williamsburg, VA 23185.
