One man was shot Saturday night after a group of men armed with handguns and shotguns allegedly broke into his apartment at Lafayette Village.
Maj. Stephen Rubino of the James City County Police Department said police responded to the 100 block of Lafayette Boulevard at 9 p.m. Saturday in reference to a home invasion. The preliminary investigation revealed that four men wearing bandannas over their faces broke into the apartment, which was occupied by seven people ranging in age from 16 to 22 years old. There were also two small children in the apartment.
Once inside, the suspects threatened the occupants of the apartment. A struggle ensued, and a 16-year-old occupant of the house was hit over the head with a chair and a 20-year-old man was shot in the neck and upper arm. The shooting victim was flown by helicopter to MCV Hospital in Richmond for surgery. He is expected to recover from his injuries.
Rubino said there was some relationship between at least some of the alleged home invaders and some of the occupants of the apartment. The four were able to get away with some items from the apartment, but police are still piecing together exactly what was taken.
A witness reported seeing the men in a gold Ford Taurus. Rubino said officers located a vehicle fitting that description on the 1900 block of Algonquin Trail in Grove. The vehicle was stopped by police in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven on Pocahontas Trail, where two of the men were taken into custody.
Police found the other two men nearby on foot.
The four suspects have each been charged with robbery and attempted murder. They are 21-year-old Christopher Allen Williams of Williamsburg, 21-year-old Devonte J. Hayes of Williamsburg, 21-year-old D’Andre Andrews Hardy of Williamsburg and 21-year-old Marklin Antonio Mitchell of White Plains, New York.
The four men are being held at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail without bond.
The Lafayette Village Apartments are located off Longhill Road near Seasons Trace.
