Wintry weather is a possibility Friday with storms bringing rain and cold weather to the Historic Triangle and beyond.
The Virginia Department of Transportation wants drivers to be aware of temperatures that could drop below freezing overnight, leading to slick driving conditions through Friday morning. The National Weather Service forecasts a mix of rain and snow, with little to no snowfall accumulation expected. Lows hover in the mid to high 20s for the Triangle.
Those conditions are enough to cause trouble on local roadways. In addition to reducing speed and increasing following distance between vehicles, VDOT recommends the following tips to stay safe:
- Make sure the vehicle is winter ready: clear all windows, lights and side mirrors before driving
- Keep an emergency kit in the vehicle
- Everyone in the vehicle should wear a seat belt
- Keep a distance of at least five seconds behind other vehicles
- Keep headlights on to increase visibility
- Allow extra time for travel
- Be aware of potentially icy areas such as shady spots and bridges
- When driving on ice, don’t slam on brakes
