Almost five years after retiring from James City County’s top executive position, Sandy Wanner has been appointed the interim administrator of Gloucester County until a permanent administrator is hired.

The Gloucester County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to name Wanner to the job, where he will replace Acting County Administrator Garrey W. Currey Jr.

The county has been without a permanent administrator since Brenda Garton left on April 30 to become administrator of Frederick County, which surrounds the independent city of Winchester in the northernmost tip of Virginia.

“I am honored to be asked to serve the historic County of Gloucester and look forward to serving citizens through the board of supervisors and staff,” Wanner said in a Gloucester County news release.

He began work as interim administrator Wednesday.

Gloucester County is currently working to hire an executive search firm to find a pool of potential full-time replacements. A similar process was employed by James City and York counties, which have both hired new administrators in the past year.

Wanner spent 14 years as James City County’s administrator. He oversaw county operations through the first part of the recession. He also acquired the land that is now home to the Warhill Sports Complex, Thomas Nelson Community College, the Law Enforcement Center, Warhill High School and what is now known as the Sanford B. Wanner Stadium.

Prior to being appointed to the county administrator job in 1996, Wanner wore several other public service hats around the Williamsburg area. He spent five years as Williamsburg-James City County Schools director of finance, 11 years as James City Service Authority general manager and six years as James City County’s assistant county administrator.

He currently serves as the chairman of the Historic Triangle Collaborative, a closed-doors group of local leaders that works to develop the area’s economy.
