boundary street snowThe Virginia Department of Transportation is mobilizing salt trucks and snow plows throughout Hampton Roads as the third bout of winter weather in as many weeks is set to begin today.

Salt trucks will take to the streets when the temperature falls below freezing or icy patches begin to develop. The Hampton Roads office is down to 41 percent salt capacity, but more salt is scheduled to be delivered today.

VDOT’s preparations come ahead of a storm projected to bring sleet accumulations during the late afternoon and into the evening. Less than half an inch of sleet is projected during Thursday evening, however a Winter Weather Advisory from the National Weather Service cautions that is enough to make for a difficult commute.

Thursday night will bring less than an inch of snow, mainly before 1 a.m. Sunny skies are projected for the rest of the week, with a high of 32 on Friday.

Area schools announced early dismissals ahead of the storm. Students in Williamsburg-James City County Schools, the York County School Division, Walsingham Academy, Williamsburg Christian Academy and Hampton Roads Academy will be dismissed hours ahead of when the sleet is supposed to start.
