The longtime leader of Williamsburg Christian Academy is stepping down.

WCA Head of School Gwen Martin announced she will retire from the position effective June 1 after 22 years of involvement at the school.

Martin began her career at WCA as a math teacher when the school was located at Waltz Farm Drive in the City of Williamsburg.

She served as interim principal in 2003 during the school’s relocation to its current building on Schoolhouse Lane near Anderson’s Corner in Toano and was named head of school soon after.

“We are exceptionally grateful for Gwen’s dedicated service for 22 years,” WCA Board of Directors President Judy Henley said in a news release. “We wish her well and a much-deserved retirement as we look forward to continuing the legacy of excellence at WCA.”

During her time at WCA, Martin directed the school through reaccreditation with the Association of Christian Schools International and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, directed its first three spring musicals and helped develop its educational enrichment and strings programs.

The school has not yet named Martin’s replacement.
