James City County Police believe 73-year-old Surry County Commonwealth’s Attorney Gerald Glen Poindexter was driving under the influence Saturday afternoon.
Police say Poindexter was attempting to board the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry from the Surry side around 3:40 p.m. when he struck a curb.
Virginia Department of Transportation employees tried to stop Poindexter, but he continued to drive his vehicle onto the ferry and hit another vehicle, causing minor damage, Deputy Chief Steve Rubino of the James City County Police Department said.
Suspecting Poindexter was under the influence of alcohol, ferry attendants called the police. They allowed Poindexter to remain on the ferry, and when it arrived in Jamestown, Poindexter was met by James City County Police officers, who arrested him and charged him with driving under the influence and missing a driver’s license.
Poindexter was transported to Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail, where he is being held on a $2,500 unsecured bond.
